This ad was one of five to run during the Oscars last night as Kohl's was the main sponsor this year. In this happy family evening at home, the teenage daughter turns to dad with the remote and says "you pick" offering him full control of the entertainment for the evening. He can't believe his luck, jumps out of his chair and mimes perfectly to Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s acceptance speech from when he won his Academy Award for "Jerry Maguire" in 1997. "I know I have a little bit of time, so I'm gonna rush and say everybody and you can cut away, I won't be mad at you," he begins, rallying around the room really excited "Don't forget to thank your wife, I will never forget to thank my high school sweetheart and the mother of my children...." he continues, running in to another room to wake his parents, and the son joins in watching the spectacle too. I find the dad to be perfectly cast, as he mimes this so animated, which is really quite funny as he certainly does not look anything like Cuba Gooding, Jr. and I think that's what makes it so funny. It's also a mixed marriage and a three generational household, a reality for many Americans, so that's nice touch too.
But of course, there will always be someone complaining on Twitter. Or joking. Hard to tell with comedians these days.
Shout out to @kohls for making commercials where white people say black actors speeches for them, it's just what this Oscars needed
