These days a simple image of a great billboard won't do, nope, one must make a case study about a billboard before one releases the billboard to the ad-loving crowd like us. This is why you saw this tweet:

Air New Zealand - The Bear Essentials of Safety - (2013)

TV's beloved outdoorsman, Bear Grylls, appears here in "the first ever"* flight safety video that's been filmed outside, in the glorious NZ countryside, to be specific.

But wait, there's more. There's a sweepstakes.

Carefully watch “The Bear Essentials of Safety”, then enter for a chance to win The Great Kiwi Bucket List: a trip for two from anywhere in the world to New Zealand. To enter, count how many scenes the Moa (the giant black bird) appears in before his true character is 'revealed'. Trip includes kayaking at Cathedral Cove, bungee jumps at Skipper Canyon, swimming with dolphins in Doubtful Sound, watching the first world's first sunrise of a new day at Wainui Beach and more.

SPCA - Meet Porter. The World's First Driving Dog - (2012) 1:48 (New Zealand)

Draftfcb New Zealand has partnered with client MINI New Zealand to help promote dog adoptions, but not in the way you'd expect… SPCA animals are smart, why just as clever as any other dog, and to prove it DraftFCB taught them how to drive Mini's.

Yep.

Driving dogs, coming soon to a highway near you. Dogs this smart deserve a home. Why, they can be the designated driver, as long as you're OK with only going ten miles an hour.

At drivingdogs.co.nz you can meet Monty, Porter and Ginny, and watch videos of their driving lessons.

YWCA - If you pay peanuts, you'll ge women - (2012)

Women make 10% less at any job than a man in New Zealand, and this campaign wants you to Demand Equal Pay. Rent is higher on Mars, but how much is makeup and feminine hygiene products? Did you know that from now until the end of the year, women work for free? Yikes.

YWCA Auckland - Demand Equal Pay / Parking Garage - (2012) :45 (New Zealand)

"...but I got all day parking, why is it more?" - "Because you have a penis."

I am going to respond to everything with "Because you have a penis" all day today.

Giant Hobbit themed carousel the latest in Hobbit crazyness in New Zealand

New Zealand is going Hobbit crazy. Not just Air New Zealand who made their new Safety Feature film all Hobbit themed, but all of New Zealand. First, when you land at the airport you will be greeted by a very large Hobbit themed baggage carousel. Then you'll find a giant Gollum, marching dwarves and a giant Gandalf sculpture.

Air New Zealand - An Unexpected Briefing / Hobbit safety video

Since their 2009 nude body paint safety video called "Nothing To Hide" Air New Zealand has been having fun with their safety vids. This time they partnered with WETA Workshop on a brand new Hobbit video. Even Sir Peter Jackson is in it. Never shy of cheeky innuendo, blowing on the mouthpiece is now an official pick-up line.

It's not all random, if you visit HobbitMovie on Air New Zealand's site, you can find and unlock the Elvish code for a chance to win one of six passes to the World Premiere Screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in New Zealand on the 28th of November 2012.

Fly Buys - Something A Little Bit Good - (2012) :60 (NZ)

Loyal Fly Buys users know that pretty amazing things can happen when they take advantage of the sprawling rewards program. In a new spot done in collaboration with Psyop LA, MPC suggests that Fly Buys may be even more remarkable than most of its loyal users realize.

St Matthew in the City Church - We Don't Care Who's On Top / support the Marriage Amendment Bill

This billboard was created for St-Matthew-in-the-city Church to show their support for the Marriage Amendment Bill, which aims to legalise same-sex marriage in New Zealand. The rejected subline was "as long as we can watch". No I'm kidding.

Dulux – Weather - (2012) :60

Stop motion house-painting awesomeness? No, it only looks like it is, but it's quite well done.

In this spot for Dulux paint, The Sweet Shop director Melanie Bridge takes her signature style in a new direction by blending the fantastic with the real. Embarking on what seems like a stop motion house painting adventure, Melanie creates a fun spot that blurs the lines between handcrafted animation and quirky computer animation.

“The key thing that we always had to ask ourselves was whether it was believable that it had been created for real,” said Melanie. “We wanted it to look like the couple had actually painted and stop framed he animation on their house themselves.”

Hell Pizza Roulette - one slice has super hot pepper sauce on it, will you get it?

No more syringe-pens, Rejected from Hell Presidents or Osama welcomings. Hell pizza decided to talk about their pizza this time, and their promo is Pizza roulette.

Pizza roulette? Yes, it's simple - you order a pizza and one slice has two drops of nuclear hot pepper sauce on it, but they won't tell you which one.

Brilliant idea.

TUI Valentines Day - Roses print ad.

Sometimes finding the right Valentines gift is a little tricky, and sometimes you forget to get anything ... No worries, Tui and Saatchi & Saatchi, Auckland to the rescue. All you have to do is roll up the ad and presto, perfect gift. Well, at least it looks like there's a bunch of roses in your hands, but only if you got her drunk on TUI I s'pose.

VW Jetta - More Lessons mean more car rides - (2011)

When DDB Singapore needed a new VW TVC profiling the VW Jetta they called on the Kings of Cutesyness (Yukfoo Animation) and we made them a devilishly sweet car spot. Directed by Julian Stokoe (who does a great line in Nice and Lovely) it's a mixed media extravaganza featuring 2D, stopmotion portraits and photographic elements - there's a heck of a lot of crayonwork going on too. It's a 60 second journey into the mindset of a car-obsessed boy who does ballet lessons on Tuesdays but isn't a pottymouth like Billy Elliot.

NZTA - 'Ghost Chips' / Legend - (2011) :60

Forget shock tactics, hello comedy. A young man "internalising a really complicated situation" as he ponders whether or not to tell his mate not to drive home.

And since you never want to say : "bro, you know I can't grab your ghost chips" he makes the right call.

Legend.

St Matthew in the City - Pray like it's 1987

WhybinTBWATequila, Auckland made this 'Turin Shroud' style poster to fan the flames of the Rugby world cup fever in New Zealand, for St Matthew in the City, a conveniently located progressive Anglican church nearby all the sports bars in the city......

Because yes, in 1987 the Rugby world cup was not only hosted by New Zealand, but also won by New Zealand.

VISA - Crayfish Bus (attack) - Wellington On a Plate: Welly On a Plate

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! Giant crayfish are clawing out of the earth from mile-deep catacombs and attacking our cities! This is revenge for that time when I poured wormwood-heavy absinth in the boiling water at our crayfish party isn't it? I thought the hallucinations would be cool not terrifying! Hold me, I'm scared!

... Oh, it's just an ad. Carry on. I never said any of that. What?

Telecom - Abstain for the game campaign ditched after only 24 hours

dabitch's picture
Posted by dabitch on 25. August 2011 - 9:49

Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand and CEO Kevin Roberts misjudged just how passionate All Blacks fans can be when they made this campaign encouraging fans to "abstain for the game". What fans do in the bedroom ain't nobody elses business but theirs. Mocked in cartoons on sports pages, ridiculed by people who work for telecom, this idea just didn't take off with the public. The campaign opened with this ad, and there were also plans to have sheep and models in bikinis parading through through Auckland with the message "abstain from sex". (Sheep, geddit? Ha ha)

New Zealand police attract new recruits with street art ad campaign

Madeleine Roberts and Julie Vahry
Yoshi

M&C Saatchi and Ikon Communications took to the streets, or rather street art, to spread the word and recruit more police officers in New Zealand. They commissioned NZ artist Otis Frizzell to create the street art installations, and each police portrait tells of a real experience the police officers have had - all in a days work.

Madeleine Roberts and Julie Vahry (first image) for example, found a burglar and as Julia was chasing him through the street, only able to see him when the flashes of lightning shone, Madie came from around the corner and greeted him with open arms. The perfect pincher moment. Gotcha!

Tui Blond - Vortex / Bikini scientist - (2011) :30 (New Zealand)

Yeah, I have a question. Is that "vortex" neck as stupid as this ad is? "Fully release the lager taste", you're just agitating the beer by a faster pour into a glass (which by the way, nobody uses), aren't you? Or is it to help chug beer faster? My bet is that this novelty bottle will vanish just like the "ice" beers of the 90s did before it.
