Georgetown Optician - Our Family Knows Glasses - (2015) 2:15 (USA)

Set to the familiar classical sounds of Georges Bizet’s ‘Carmen Suite No. 2 – Habanera’, this whimsical story ups the quirk to exceptional levels for Georgetown Optician. Featuring Isaac, Irene and Ivan as a family of Addamsesque eyewear obsessives, the pleasure is more in the meticulously set scenery rather than any particularly coherent or inspiring narrative.

There’s a lot done well here; the accompanying posters are (to my eyes at least) something entirely rare – iconic and refreshing. However the strength built by the entertaining vignettes of this film is somewhat dissipated by the length. It needs editing down and condensing to a 1:30 at most. While Adweek makes the rather immediate comparison of Wes Anderson, one might also be reminded of the giant floating eyeballs from the music video PONPONPON (2011).
